Police: Suspect in stolen SUV arrested after crashing into patrol car, foot pursuit

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A suspect is in custody following a pursuit and foot chase on the northwest side of Indianapolis Friday afternoon.
Around 3:30 p.m., a Lawrence Police officer spotted a stolen 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling westbound on 56th Street near Post Road. The officer attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver refused to pull over.
A pursuit ensued, and the suspect’s SUV struck a Marion County Sheriff’s Office patrol car near 56th Street and Georgetown Road. The impact caused the patrol car to spin out, but the deputy inside was not injured.
The suspect then got out of his SUV and ran away on foot. Officers from several agencies pursued the suspect, and he was eventually apprehended near 56th Street and Hague Road.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Joshua Whitaker, was arrested and preliminarily charged with auto theft, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement on foot, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police say Whitaker has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for auto theft, burglary, and drug possession.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the incident.
